A Japanese man died aboard a plane because he had 246 bags of cocaine in his body.
The man had boarded a flight in the Colombian capital Bogotá that would go via Mexico City to the Narita airport in his Japanese home country.
Shortly after the plane took off again from the Mexican capital, the man on board suffered from convulsions, causing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in the city of Hermosillo, some 1,600 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.
After the man was removed from the plane by paramedics, the aircraft was able to continue its journey with the remaining 198 passengers.
The autopsy later revealed that the Japanese had swallowed 246 plastic bags filled with cocaine for smuggling. According to the local authorities, the bags were about 2.5 centimeters long and 1 centimeter wide.
According to the autopsy report, the 42-year-old man died of “a brain edema due to an overdose of drugs”. His body is being held in Hermosillo for further investigation.
