Journalists removed from Al Jazeera after Holocaust video

In World War II, over six million Jewish people were slaughtered by the Nazi regime, but a video recently published on Al Jazeera’s website suggests that the number was an exaggeration and was “adopted by the Zionist movement”. The narrator of the video said some sensitive things, asking why there’s a focus on just the Jewish victims, and proposing that the community utilizes financial resources and the media to place a “special spotlight” on Jewish suffering.

The video could be found on social media sites with the caption, “What is the truth of the Holocaust and how did the Zionist movement benefit from it?” The video was published in Arabic, but the Middle East Media Research Institute posted an English version on twitter, drawing intense criticism. The claims made have been censured as prejudicial.

Response to the video

A spokesperson from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emmanuel Nahshon, said, “That’s how Al Jazeera brainwashes young people in the Arab world and perpetuates hatred of Israel and the Jews,” referring to the video as “Lies and evil propagated by the ideological descendants of Der Stürmer.”

A distinguished journalist from Al Jazeera, Medhi Hasan, commented that he was “glad to see Al Jazeera bosses taking disciplinary action” due to the video he deemed “ridiculously offensive and dumb”.

Al Jazeera stated that the video was removed as it “violated the editorial standards of the network”. According to the statement, Al Jazeera “continues to adhere to the journalistic values of honesty, courage, fairness, balance, independence, credibility, and diversity, giving no priority to commercial or political over professional consideration. In addition, the network recognizes the diversity on societies with all races, cultures. beliefs and their values, and intrinsic individualities.”

Executive director of Al Jazeera’s digital department, Dr Yaser Bishr, said that he requested there be a “mandatory bias training and awareness programme.”
