The US reality star called her figure-shaping lingerie “Kimono.” Many Japanese feel the name as disrespectful and criticized the reality star under the hashtag #KimOhNo.
US reality star Kim Kardashian is causing trouble in Japan with her new underwear brand: Kardashian is selling the figure-shaping underwear under the brand name “Kimono”. Many Japanese felt the name, which in Japan has been a traditional garment for centuries, disrespectful and criticized the reality star under the hashtag #KimOhNo.
Kim Kardashian causes stir of anger in Japan with new underwear brand “Kimono”
“I’m shocked, she has no respect,” wrote a user in Japanese in the online service Twitter. Another user wrote, “I like Kim Kardashian, but please take another name than kimono when it comes to underwear.” One user even called on the Japanese government to officially protest against Kardashian.
Kardashian’s tight-fitting lingerie doesn’t have much in common with the traditional Japanese kaftan-type kimonos. In Japanese kimono simply means garment. Kardashian presumably chose the name because it begins with the same letter as her first name. No explanation is provided on the website of their new brand though.
Kardashian herself did not comment on the criticism. At the launch of her new underwear line, she wrote on Twitter that she had been working for a year to create “solutions” for women who “really work”.

Finally I can share with you guys this project that I have been developing for the last year. I’ve been passionate about this for 15 years. Kimono is my take on shapewear and solutions for women that actually work. I would always cut up my shapewear to make my own styles, and there have also been so many times I couldn’t find a shapeware color that blended with my skin tone so we needed a solution for all of this. The third pic is the solution short. I developed this style for all of those times I wanted to wear a dress or skirt with a slit and still needed the support. Introducing Kimono Solutionwear™ for every body. Coming Soon in sizes XXS – 4XL in 9 shades. I can’t wait for you to feel this fabric!#KimonoBody @kimono Photos by Vanessa Beecroft
