In the highly anticipated game Cyberpunk 2077 you will be thrown into a dystopian future, in which it is normal to replace a limb with a mechanical arm. An arm that hackers can break into.
We have been looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 for some time. The game is made by CD Projekt, the studio that was also responsible for the successful Witcher fantasy games. Cyberpunk 2077, like these games, is going to be an RPG, but in a science fiction world.
Although the game was not yet playable, we were shown a one-hour game session at the E3 game fair. Herein, protagonist V tried to penetrate a gang to trace a submerged anti-hacker agent.
A complex dystopia was quickly shown in the demo. For example, V has a computer port on his wrist that he can use to hack devices, but with which a gang leader could also log into his brain. This allowed the gang leader to keep an eye on every activity of V and even choose to destroy his brain.
As the game progresses, more and more small details come along. Eating meat is illegal, for example, because a producer of synthetic meat substitutes has a big lobby. In addition, the protagonist appears to have a mysterious chip in his head that makes him immortal, but also constantly shows a cyber spirit played by Keanu Reeves.
We were shown the same mission twice. The mission was carried out with two different characters. It shows that Cyberpunk 2077 will in fact have multiple endings.
A deadly gym
The first session was conducted by a sophisticated hacker, who came sneaking closer to his target. Sometimes the hacks used were harmless. For example, V broke into security cameras so that he could sneak past them unseen. However, the same skill can also be used to painfully eliminate enemies.
For example, V broke into a boxing robot to convert the safety switch so that he could eliminate his human sparring partner in one go. In the same gym, the protagonist also hacked a fitness machine, causing the victim to be crushed by a huge weight.
The hacks became even more grim when V turned its attention to the enemies themselves. Almost all people in the world have replaced their own arms and legs with cybernetic limbs, which can also be hacked remotely. By hacking the arm of an enemy, for example, it is possible to force him to shoot himself in the head.
The game sketches a world in which hacking attacks have even greater consequences than is already the case. The city in the game is filled with robotics, so a cyber attack quickly leads to physical consequences.
Open closed doors
The second play session was switched to a female version of V. She is less skilled in hacking, but can fight well because of her powerful limbs. She can open security doors with her bare hands, allowing her to travel different routes than weaker characters.
This stronger character makes Cyberpunk 2077 comparable in style to a shooting game such as Call of Duty. This version of V can hold fairly heavy machine guns and survive fistfights with muscular mercenaries.
At the end of both sessions, V reaches his target, which confronts the character with a horrific fact. If V completes the mission, the client will immediately send a virus to his or her brain. In this dialogue, the player could choose to continue the mission and take the risk or forge an alliance with the opponent.
With Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt shows a world in which current developments have broken through. The recently announced Watch Dogs: Legion wants to do the same, but is set in the near future. Because Cyberpunk 2077 takes place decades later, the contrasts are greater.
The Polish game publisher wants to create a stir with Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt promises that the element of the large number of options that we saw in the mission will be reflected in the entire game. Moreover, the story is also set in a very large city. What the scale is exactly was not made clear in the demo.
Creating characters in Cyberpunk 2077 not limited by gender
CD Projekt has also announced more about creating your own character in Cyberpunk 2077 and how the game displays transgenders. The studio did this after criticizing the in-game advertisement that sexualises a trans-model to sell a drink with the slogan ‘Mix It Up’.
“It is a very sensitive and important topic,” says Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz in conversation with Gamasutra. “We’ve thought a lot about this. One of the things we want to do in the final game is to give players as many customization options as we can at the start of the game.”
“The idea is to combine everything and give it to the player so that they can make it the way they want,” says Tomaszkiewicz. Physical traits that should not be tied to gender in Cyberpunk 2077. “The same goes for the voice. We want to separate that, so that players can choose freely. This is something we are still working on, it is not as simple as it sounds.”
“We don’t want anyone to feel neglected or treated wrong,” says Tomaszkiewicz, and CD Projekt also “gives a lot of attention” to portraying trans characters outside of the customization options.
The release of Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for April 16, 2020 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
