American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift recently discussed her shift in perception over the American values she once believed in. The star expressed her feelings of conflict around what the United States represents, as she says that “all the dirtiest tricks in the book were used and it worked”. The 29 year old referred to the setting in the U.S as “gaslighting the American public into being like, ‘If you hate the president, you hate America.'”
Swift feels that Trump is running a dictatorship
Commenting on Donald Trump’s presidency, Swift said, “We’re a democracy – at least, we’re supposed to be – where you’re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate. I really think that (Trump) thinks this is an autocracy.”
Swift’s views are the most recent by-product of her political disillusionment. She received some criticism from her fans after she failed to show her support to a particular candidate during the last presidential elections. The songwriter explained her discomfort with being in the public spotlight after going through a hard time in 2016 with the cancer relapse of her mother, as well as the dispute with rap artist Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian.
“I was just trying to protect my mental health: not read the news very much, go cast my vote, tell people to vote. I just knew what I could handle and I knew what I couldn’t. I was literally about to break,” said Swift.
Taylor said that if she wasn’t feeling so “useless” at the time, she would have endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. The star spoke to The Guardian as lawmakers in Tennessee were voting to enforce almost a complete ban on abortion in the state. “Obviously, I’m pro-choice,” stated Swift. “I just can’t believe this is happening.”
The pop artist just released her latest album, Lover. A number of tracks on the album continue to display her ongoing stretch of “activism”.
